Bill Reid, notable escultor canadiense de origen haida, y Robert Bringhurst, poeta de la misma nacionalidad, especializado a su vez en la literatura de dicho pueblo, han recopilado en este libro lo que Reid modestamente denomina "versiones de refilón de los grandes relatos antiguos" pero que, en opinión de Claude Lévi-Satrauss, no sólo "siguen siendo muy fieles" sino que conservan "el gran encanto de estas historias maravillosas".
"Fruto de una colaboración inspirada entre artista y poeta", este libro narra algunos de los grandes mitos de los primitivos pobladores de la costa del Noroeste americano tal como han sido transmitidos durante siglos de forma oral y como le fueron relatados a Reid en su juventud, al tiempo que los ilustra con los dibujos, extremadamente refinados, del mismo, cuya obra escultórica tanto debe a los mismos personajes totémicos que los protagonizan, en especial el tramposo Cuervo.
